On the 21st of December 2006 Premier Decorative Products (always referred to locally as “Storeys”) ceased production. PDP was the direct descendant of a line of businesses which started as Storeys of Lancaster in the early nineteenth century. These images were captured in the weeks immediately following the factory closure and are a personal view of the abandoned premises.
I initially set out to capture the grand scale of the interiors and machinery but found my attention repeatedly drawn to the smaller artefacts abandoned by the departing workforce – signs of life. For me this was a last look around a familiar place that I thought I knew well, but it still revealed new treasures and unexpected beauties. For those that knew the place I hope these pictures will be eye opening, for those that didn’t I hope the insight to a private world will prove fascinating.
